Bishop Allen Academy has achieved an extraordinary milestone, earning top honours at MusicFest Canada Nationals in what marked the school’s first-ever participation in the prestigious event.
Although Bishop Allen’s bands have received invitations to MusicFest Nationals in previous years, 2026 marked the first time the school accepted—and the decision proved to be a resounding success. Under the direction of Davide Garofalo, both ensembles delivered outstanding performances, bringing home a remarkable double Gold Standing along with a Certificate of Excellence.
On May 13, the Bishop Allen Concert Band and Big Band travelled to the Niagara Falls Convention Centre to compete among more than 250 schools from across Canada. The six-day national festival showcases approximately 9,500 student musicians, making it one of the largest and most competitive music events in the country.
Both ensembles performed two of their strongest sets of the year, demonstrating exceptional musicality, discipline, and technical skill. Their performances earned each group a coveted Gold Standing on the national stage—an impressive accomplishment for a debut appearance.
Following their performances, students participated in educational workshops led by some of Canada’s most respected adjudicators. During these sessions, both bands were highly praised for their attention to detail and musicianship. The Concert Band further distinguished itself by receiving the prestigious Certificate of Excellence for its work in the clinic, highlighting the ensemble’s adaptability and commitment to growth.
Celebrating Student Leadership
The success of Bishop Allen’s music program is also a reflection of its strong student leadership. Two musicians were recognized for their dedication and artistry:
JunHee R. received the Student Leadership Award for the Concert Band
Greg T. received the Student Leadership Award for the Jazz Band
These honours underscore the important role student leaders play in setting high standards and fostering a culture of excellence within the program.
Despite the demanding schedule, the ensembles demonstrated remarkable stamina and commitment. After returning home late from Nationals, students prepared for and performed in their annual Spring Concert the very next day—delivering yet another set of exceptional performances.
Bishop Allen’s debut at MusicFest Nationals sets a new benchmark for the school’s music program and highlights the exceptional talent and dedication of its students. The entire school community can take immense pride in this achievement.
Congratulations to all performers on this outstanding accomplishment!
