Thanks to the generous support of a grant provided by the City of Toronto Environmental Planner, Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School recently hosted a highly successful biking initiative that brought education, environmental awareness, and real-world cycling skills to life for our students and community.

The project, led and organized by Grade 12 student leader Gabi V., aimed to embed safe biking education into our curriculum. With this grant, we were able to launch a school and community-wide effort to teach students how to bike responsibly and confidently throughout Toronto’s urban landscape.

Throughout the program, students explored the city on bikes—making use of Toronto’s bike share system—as they traveled through local neighborhoods and along the beautiful waterfront trails. They gained hands-on experience in using dedicated bike lanes, navigating high-traffic areas safely, and understanding how cycling contributes to a healthier city with reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and less noise and traffic congestion. This session empowered them with the skills needed to remain safe and self-reliant on the road.

This initiative would not have been possible without the vision and leadership of Gabi V., whose planning and proposal brought this meaningful project to life. Her work inspired her peers and brought a valuable learning experience to our physical education program.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the City of Toronto Environmental Planner for believing in our project and providing the funding that made this initiative a reality. Your support has had a lasting impact on our students, our school, and our community’s commitment to sustainability and active transportation. Thank you!
