Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School is proud to congratulate our Ethics Bowl Team (Minnie, Simone K. and Simone B.), who competed in the Canadian National Ethics Bowl Championships held at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, and who were crowned champions after an undefeated six-round sweep. The top 12 teams from across the whole country attended this competition, including three teams from Ontario. Over 300 teams competed across the country this year overall.
The Loretto Abbey team swept the entire competition, winning all 4 preliminary rounds, followed by a semi-final against Nothern Secondary School from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and a final round against Langly Fine Arts School from British Columbia. They won all 6 rounds, each of the rounds being an hour long, leaving them exhausted but triumphant by the end.
No other team came close to this six-round winning streak record. There has also never been a team this small to ever make it to the finals, let alone win the whole championship. Perhaps more importantly is how much the team loved every part of this weekend. They participated in all social activities and academic discussions, discoursing with all teams, moderators, professors, and teachers. They were a force to be reckoned within the competition, and you could see it in the actual rounds and outside of it as well. They made friends with everyone and received a standing ovation from all teams after they won, which speaks not only to their intelligence but also to their kindness and integrity that was evident to everyone in that room.
Thank you to all the Loretto Abbey staff who have helped these students over the past few weeks while they prepared their 12 cases for the nationals!
