The Physical and Health Education department believes that daily active living through physical education offers students the balance they need in their high school curriculum.
This year we are offering new and exciting programs that will motivate and encourage you to be more physically active. Our courses help to develop general fitness, movement skills, and leadership qualities.
This is achieved by focusing on a variety of health issues, sports and fitness-based activities. Our goals are to develop informed members of society who choose to live active and healthy lives.

Grade 9/10 Boys/Girls Physical Education
In this course students will participate in a variety of team sports and health classes. The goal of this course is to enhance fitness, health and general athletic skills.

Grade 11 Elective Physical Education
In this course students will participate in a variety of team sports. They will also be introduced to individual sports and fitness training principles.

Grade 11 Personal Fitness
In this course students will challenge themselves to vigorous daily workouts while learning the scientific foundations of exercise and training. Students will participate in circuit training, resistance exercise and anaerobic/aerobic conditioning. They will also have the opportunity to play a variety of sports and activities. The main goal of this course is to give students the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively implement individual exercise programs.

Grade 12 Recreational Leadership and Fitness
In this course students will learn leadership theory and develop leadership skills. They will also organize, present and evaluate the intramural program as representatives of SMAC (St. Mary’s Athletic Council). Students will also learn about event planning through the organization and implementation of our schools annual Athletic Banquet.

Grade 12 Exercise Science
This course focuses on the anatomical and biomechanical basis of human movement and the systems, factors and principles involved in human locomotion. This course also addresses joint mobility and injury prevention as it relates to daily and athletic applications. It prepares students for university programs in kinesiology, medicine, nursing, recreation and sports administration.
