School History and Tradition
The story of St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School is one of transformation. St. Patrick was originally an elementary school in Toronto when it was established in 1852 on Market Street. The school moved to different locations in the city until it was established as St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School on D’Arcy Street in 1986. In 1989, we moved to our current location on Felstead Avenue, taking over the building once occupied by Lakeview Public School. On May 2, 1990, our school blessing took place, and a blessing and dedication of the chapel occurred on November 30, 1994. Our new Arts, Technology and Physical Education Wing was officially blessed on April 16, 1997.
In 2010, St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School continued to evolve as it was designated as the Centre for Arts, Media and Technology. Over the past several years, we have developed Enriched Programs in Dance, Dramatic Arts, Music and Visual Arts, as well as a strong Advanced Placement program for English, Math and Science. In 2019, we created the Media Technology Audition (MTA) program, the first of its kind in the TCDSB. We also established two Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs: Hospitality & Tourism and Design/Construction Technology. Our facilities have also evolved over time and now feature state-of-the-art recording, dance and theatre arts studios, PC and Mac computer labs, a bakery and servery, as well as a laser cutter, 3D printers, robotics and technological design workshops. We had a new FIFA-grade soccer field built in 2017.
The current St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School - The Centre for Arts, Media and Technology is now one of the premier schools in the city, with a creative and dynamic staff offering our students exceptional academic and extracurricular programs.
Though our facility and programs have evolved through the years, the faith that inspired the founding of St. Patrick and that is contained in our school motto "Amor Christi Nos Impellit" - "The Love of Christ Impels Us" remains constant. The shamrock in our school crest symbolizes the emblem of Ireland, and the Blessed Trinity (three leaves in one). Our patron saints are St. Patrick and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. St. Patrick was responsible for the conversion of Ireland to Christianity in 432. He is the patron saint of the Irish who were refugees to Canada in the 1840’s due to the discrimination and oppression they suffered in their home country. St. Patrick embodies our Catholic, humanitarian and historic identity. St. Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620-1700), was a French missionary and educator in New France (Canada). She was the founder of the Congregation de Notre Dame (CND). Sister L. Corrigan, one of the members of the Congregation de Notre Dame, was the first principal of St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School.
