Media Technology

The Media Technology Audition (MTA) program at St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School is an auditioned Media Arts and Communication Technology stream designed to inspire students to become “creative leaders” equipped with a design thinking mindset and the digital skills for success in our ever evolving social landscape.

This auditioned class will focus on nurturing twenty-first century competencies such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving and communication as seen through a design lens. Students will become fluent in the digital visual language that continues to prevail.

Creativity is seeing what everyone else has seen, and thinking what no one else has thought. - Albert Einstein

Courses provide students with opportunities to bring their creative ideas to life while developing their design skills. Auditioned students will be required to take one Communication Technology credit and one Media Arts credit each year to reinforce consistent interpretation, ideation, collaboration, experimentation and evolution of their ideas. These classes are team-taught in the MTA computer lab filled with new iMacs for each student and industry standard software. Grade 9 and 10 students work together as Junior MTA, the Grade 11 and 12 auditioned students also collaborate to make up the Senior MTA class.

Prior to graduating, students will learn how to dissect their work and pitch ideas based on research and creative development, and produce quality portfolio pieces for post secondary destinations.  Senior students will also have the opportunity to write, perform and produce “The Print Room” - a new podcast launched this year.

MTA students are offered a variety of local excursions to explore the artistic and cultural scene in the City of Toronto, while the Senior MTA students have the opportunity to attend an overnight excursion to an international cultural destination. This year's Senior MTA trip is to New York City! The senior students are involved in branding, organizing and launching fundraising events to subsidize the cost of the trip. This year's fundraiser event is called “ Feel Famous Night”.

The more we practice unleashing creativity, the easier it becomes to do so. We believe that innovation comes about through tireless intellectual curiosity, deep optimism, an ability to accept repeated failures as the price of ultimate success, a relentless work ethic, and a mindset that encourages not just ideas but action. The MTA program embraces this ideology to fully engage students in looking beyond the obvious for unique solutions that can be applied in all areas of study.
