Welcome to the English and Modern Languages Department! We are excited to introduce students to a dynamic and engaging learning environment where they explore the richness of language and literature. At Loretto College School, we believe that language is the foundation to understanding diverse cultures and perspectives that inspire students and foster a love of language learning.
English
Our English program emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication skills. Students explore a variety of literary genres, develop writing skills, and engage in meaningful discussions. To prepare students for various pathways, our books reflect the diversity of the student population, and students actively participate in the selection process, ensuring a variety of voices and perspectives are represented. From classic novels to contemporary works, our curriculum encourages students to explore themes of identity, society, and human experience.
French
Our French program offers students the opportunity to learn one of the world’s most spoken languages. Through interactive lessons, students not only learn the language, but also explore French literature, art, and traditions, enhancing their global perspective.
Spanish
Our Spanish program is designed to immerse students in language while celebrating Hispanic cultures. With a focus on conversational skills and cultural appreciation, students engage in activities that promote real world language use, while also exploring contemporary issues in the Spanish speaking world.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Our ESL program supports second language English speakers in their language acquisition journey. We provide tailored instruction that focuses on building foundational skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. With a welcoming atmosphere, our community ensures that every student feels valued and empowered to succeed. Our dedicated ESL teachers work closely with students to develop their confidence and fluency in English.
First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies
The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies course is an integral part of our program. This course offers students a unique opportunity to explore the rich and diverse cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous People. Through collaborative projects and discussions, this course aims to foster an understanding of Indigenous perspectives and promote cultural awareness, respect, allyship, and reconciliation.
Our English and Modern Languages Department is committed to providing students with the skills and experiences they need to thrive in a globalized society.
