Health and Physical Education
Our spirited Health and Physical Education department fosters the growth of student health, well-being, and physical fitness. Through movement principles, students learn to refine skills and improve personal competence while exploring topics such as healthy sexuality, nutrition, and mental health. The curriculum emphasizes Catholic values, moral decision-making, and social skills. Students in any grade can choose courses in this department, including Healthy Active Living Education and specialized courses like Kinesiology. The focus is on regular participation in enjoyable physical activities and sports, promoting lifelong healthy living.
In Physical Education, students can expect a dynamic and engaging experience focused on promoting health, well-being, and physical fitness. Students will develop their physical skills, enhance their personal competence, and foster an understanding of the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle. Throughout the course, they will participate in a variety of physical activities that will promote their cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and coordination. They will also engage in team sports and recreational activities, providing they with a well-rounded experience. Activities may include basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, dance, yoga, and more!
In addition to their physical skills, students will also explore various health-related topics, learning about healthy eating, positive mental health, healthy relationships, substance use and abuse, and responsible decision-making. They will take time to reflect on how an understanding of these factors contribute to their overall well-being. Health and Physical Education courses emphasize the development of important life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, and sportsmanship, which students will learn and practice by collaborating with peers in problem-solving and friendly competition. All students can expect an active and interactive Physical Education course that not only enhances their physical fitness but also equips them with valuable skills and knowledge to lead a healthy and balanced life.
Health and Physical Education courses are available through all grades at the "O" level, meaning that all students can participate no matter which pathway they are a part of. A full complement of Health and Physical Education classes provides students with opportunities to pursue careers as physical education teachers, personal trainers, sports coaches, exercise physiologists, or health promotion specialists. These courses provide a strong foundation for further studies in kinesiology, exercise science, sports management, or allied health professions such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy. Students can pursue degrees in these fields or obtain certifications to specialize in areas like strength and conditioning, sports therapy, or sports nutrition. Whether students choose to directly enter the workforce or continue their education, the knowledge and skills gained from these courses will equip them for rewarding careers in promoting health, physical fitness, and overall well-being.
