St. Mary Catholic Academy is proud to celebrate the outstanding success of our St. Mary Athletic Council (SMAC), which has been awarded the 2025 Innovative Exemplary Practice Award. This recognition highlights our school's ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable access to sports for all students.
Founded in 2021 by Physical Education and Leadership teacher Orest Sawka, SMAC was established as a student leadership initiative focused on creating a co-ed intramural lunch league that emphasizes participation, fairness, and community building. What began as a modest effort has grown into one of the school's most popular programs, with more than 100 students now taking part in the four-month league.
Central to SMAC's mission is its deep connection to St. Mary's Individualized Support Program (ISP). Recognizing the energy and spirit that ISP students bring to the school, SMAC has worked closely with ISP teacher Rocco Scopelliti to ensure that students with special needs are not only included but actively integrated into the program. Through thoughtful equipment accommodations, game modifications, and enhanced safety measures, SMAC has built a truly inclusive sporting environment where "everyone plays against everyone, no matter what."
"SMAC represents the heart of who we are as a Catholic school community, faith-filled, inclusive, and committed to the well-being of every student," said Principal Lisa Gomes. "We are so proud of the leadership shown by our students and staff."
The program's impact has resonated far beyond the gym, gaining the attention of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) leadership. Director of Education Dr. Brendan Browne and Superintendent Robert D'Addario recently recognized the program's outstanding contributions by presenting St. Mary Catholic Academy with the 2025 Innovative Exemplary Practice Award.
Looking ahead, SMAC is poised to continue as an annual highlight for students, reinforcing a culture of teamwork, empathy, and inclusive play. As our school community reflects on this achievement, one message is clear: at St. Mary, everyone belongs on the team.
