Loretto College Schools’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) cohort had the opportunity to visit The Stop Community Food Centre. The Stop is a community hub that is dedicated to supporting local families and offering various programs that promote social well being.

Our learning focus during the visit was sustainability, which connects to the overarching theme of our interdisciplinary project.

During the tour, we had the opportunity to learn about the Stop and the various ways in which they practise sustainability and how it is all connected to food security and social justice. As part of our visit, we explored the greenhouse and the outdoor gardens that were filled with plants, vegetables, herbs, and pollinator plants. We also deepened our understanding of the science of composting and its role in reducing waste, its environmental benefits and how it supports sustainable ecosystems. In the afternoon, we participated in a hands-on activity planting seeds, explored the importance of healthy soil, and discovered how plants grow and thrive.

We’re excited to continue growing this partnership and to find new ways together to promote social responsibility and sustainability in our community.

Our thanks and recognition to Justine, Robert, Adwoa and Brianna at The Stop.

Loretto is .. Small school with a Big Heart!
