The Arts and Culture Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from Loretto College School have been very busy this fall! Recently, our students visited the YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre in Schomberg to obtain two certifications in customer service and event planning. While participating in confidence and team building exercises such as archery and group challenges, students worked in groups to solve hands-on puzzles and challenges, ultimately refining their communication and cooperative learning skills.

During certification, our Arts and Culture SHSM students learned the necessary skills needed for effective customer service and robust event planning. In service training, students were certified in customer service standards and learned, through group challenges and role-play, about the characteristics of a great service provider such as strong effective communication and conflict resolution skills. Finally, students were certified in event planning through discussions and experiential activities. Students explored the fundamentals of planning and coordinating events such as utilizing the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis tool and completed a group challenge event planning scenario. A busy day for our Arts and Culture SHSM students indeed, but one full of learning and relationship building!

At Loretto College–the small school with a big heart–we believe that when girls are given the tools, encouragement, and opportunities they need, they can become successful women in the future!
