On February 9, 2026, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from six Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) schools attended The Tea About Being a Black Law Student at Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Lincoln Alexander School of Law Hosted by the Black Law Students’ Association (BLSA Lincoln) as part of Black History Month, the event brought together Black law students, alumni, and legal professionals from across Canada for mentorship, career exploration, and community building.
Students participated in mentorship circles, explored pathways in law, policy, and advocacy, and gained practical advice on navigating post-secondary education — including financial planning and available supports. They also observed a moot court exercise led by BLSA members and engaged with a guest panel of Black legal professionals. A special acknowledgement goes to Toronto Catholic District School Board alumna Kien Azinwi Sanigong (2016), whose leadership and commitment to uplifting future Black scholars continues to inspire. Her work — and the work of BLSA Lincoln — reminds students that representation matters, their aspirations are valid, and their voices are essential in shaping the justice sector.
The event was deeply valued by our students and staff. We extend our sincere thanks to the Black Law Students’ Association at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law and all volunteers who made this enriching experience possible.
