Toronto Catholic District School Board

TCDSB Approves New Trustee Ward Boundaries for 2018 Municipal Election

TORONTO-August 9, 2018: The Toronto Catholic District School Board at a Special Board Meeting on August 8, 2018 approved the establishment of new Trustee Ward boundaries for the upcoming Municipal Elections on October 22, 2018.
Existing Trustee Wards, including the local Catholic schools they represent, remain unchanged and the new boundaries DO NOT come into effect until December 1, 2018.
On July 30, 2018, the Government of Ontario introduced legislation known as Bill 5: Better Local Government Act, to reduce the number of Toronto City Council seats from 47 to 25 by aligning ward boundaries with current provincial and federal ridings which included a directive to redistribute TCDSB Trustee Ward boundaries.
These changes do not affect the current number of Toronto Catholic District School Board Trustees which will remain at 12. However, it impacts the distribution areas of Trustee Wards and the local schools they represent.
"We appreciate the work by staff under very tight timelines imposed by the Province of Ontario to realign new Trustee Wards," says TCDSB Chair Barbara Poplawski. "Regretfully, the compressed timeframe did not allow for comprehensive public consultation with our parents and ratepayers, but I am pleased Trustees were able to work collaboratively to ensure the new Wards provide fair and equitable representation for our Catholic school communities."
A deadline of August 14, 2018 was set by the Ministry of Education for the Board to complete the re-distribution of TCDSB Trustee seats according to the proposed new municipal boundaries. The Minister of Education would have re-distributed Trustee positions on August 17, if the Board had not completed the realignment process by the deadline.
