Dear Families,

With the season’s first snowfall arriving, we want to share a quick reminder about the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB)’s winter weather procedures. As we head into the colder months, we remain committed to keeping our school communities safe and ensuring learning continues with as little disruption as possible.

How Weather Decisions Are Made

When Environment Canada forecasts severe weather such as freezing rain, heavy snowfall, unsafe road conditions, low visibility, or extreme cold, we work with Toronto Student Transportation Group (TSTG) to monitor conditions overnight and into the early morning to determine next steps.

If bus cancellations or school closures are required, families will be notified after 6:00 AM so they can plan accordingly.

Families Will Be Notified If:

  • Schools are closed, and/or

  • Buses are cancelled

How We Notify Families:

Please note: if schools are open and buses are running, a notification will only be shared on the Board’s social media accounts.

Bus Delays During the Day

Bus delays and route updates will be communicated through BusPlanner. Register for alerts on the TSTG website.

If Buses Are Cancelled and Schools Remain Open

On days with inclement weather, while schools remain open, parents and guardians have the final say on whether to send their child to school. You may choose to keep your child at home if you prefer. Families will need to make alternate transportation arrangements for students who normally take the bus.

Please visit our Inclement Weather Protocol page for more information.

Snow Clearing and Ice Control/Salting Procedures

  • Snow and ice clearing begins once 25 mm (1 inch) of snow has fallen or anytime melting snow, freezing rain, or icy conditions create (or may create) unsafe surfaces.

  • Walkways and entrances are cleared by approximately 7:30 AM each day, including weekends, to ensure safe access for students and staff.

  • During extremely heavy overnight snowfall, this timeline may be delayed, but crews work hard to meet it whenever possible.

We encourage students to dress in warm layers, including hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants. Packing an extra pair of socks, gloves, or pants in your child’s backpack can help ensure they stay dry throughout the day.

Thank you for your cooperation as we enter the winter season. We appreciate your continued partnership in supporting student safety and well-being.
