Message from Director of Education - Dr. Brendan Browne

Dear Families of Elementary Students,

I hope you and your children have had a great start to the 2022-2023 school year. It has been wonderful to welcome most of our staff and students back in person in communities throughout the city.

As we embark on another school year, I would like to update you on possible changes some schools and classrooms may experience. Each year a staff reorganization takes place as per the Collective Agreement once student enrolment is confirmed at every school. Enrolment stabilizes over the first two to three weeks of school each year which allows for appropriate staffing directly tied to the number of students in every school.

Once this annual reorganization process is finalized in our elementary schools, it may take time to operationalize changes. Some schools and classrooms can expect such changes in the weeks ahead.

Possible Changes

In order to address increases or decreases in student enrollment locally, staffing and student placement changes may be necessary. For some elementary classes, this may mean changes in the teacher or class composition. We recognize and appreciate the leadership and decision-making of principals to facilitate these changes where necessary, and the understanding and partnership with parents/guardians throughout this process.

Every reorganization, where necessary, will be as thoughtful as possible to our students and staff as we look forward to providing stability throughout the academic year.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this together.

Sincerely,

Brendan Browne
Director of Education
